The Five Most Common AC Faults We See on Nigerian Roads

Air conditioning takes a beating in Nigeria — heat, dust, and the long hours of stop-start traffic. Here are the five faults we see most often.

Nigerian roads are tough on car air conditioning. Ambient temperatures regularly hit 35°C+. Traffic jams mean engines and AC systems run continuously without the cooling airflow they get on the highway. Harmattan dust gets into condensers. The systems work harder than they would in temperate climates and they fail in predictable ways.

Here are the five AC problems we see most often, what causes them, and how they're properly fixed.

1. AC blows cool, then warm, then cool again

What's happening: the AC clutch is cycling on and off rapidly. The compressor engages, refrigerant flows, cooling happens; then something shuts it off, the air goes warm; then it kicks back on.

Common causes: low refrigerant pressure (system has lost refrigerant somewhere), faulty low-pressure switch, contaminated refrigerant, partial blockage in the system.

What we do: pressure-test the system. If pressures are low, find the leak (UV dye, electronic leak detector, soap test). If pressures are normal but cycling continues, test the pressure switches. If the system is contaminated (often from incorrect previous refills), recover the refrigerant, flush the system, and refill with the correct refrigerant.

The wrong fix: top up with refrigerant without finding the leak. We've seen vehicles where this has been done four times. The leak is still there.

2. Strong smell when AC is first turned on

What's happening: bacterial growth on the evaporator coil. Moisture condenses on the cold evaporator, organic matter (dust, pollen) builds up, bacteria thrive in the dark moist environment.

Common causes: cabin filter not replaced regularly, vehicle stored in humid conditions, AC system not used regularly enough to dry out.

What we do: clean the evaporator core (we use an enzymatic cleaner accessed through a service port), replace the cabin filter, recommend running the fan-only mode for a few minutes after AC use to dry the evaporator.

The wrong fix: spraying air freshener through the vents masks the smell for a day. The bacteria are still there.

3. AC compressor makes loud noise when engaged

What's happening: bearings failing inside the compressor, or compressor clutch slipping.

Common causes: old compressor, contaminated refrigerant has damaged internal components, incorrect oil level inside the compressor (often from incorrect previous service).

What we do: confirm the noise source (sometimes it's the idler pulley or tensioner, not the compressor). If it's the compressor, the usual fix is replacement. Internal compressor repair is rarely economical. We flush the entire system before installing the new compressor to remove any debris from the failed unit.

The wrong fix: replacing only the compressor without flushing the system. Debris from the failed compressor circulates and destroys the new one.

4. AC works at speed but blows warm at idle

What's happening: insufficient airflow through the condenser at low speed.

Common causes: condenser cooling fan not working (electrical or motor failure), condenser fins blocked with debris or dirt, refrigerant level low.

What we do: at idle, check that the condenser fan is running. Often it's not. Failed fan motor, blown fuse, bad relay, or wiring fault. Clean the condenser thoroughly if dirty. Verify refrigerant level.

The wrong fix: assuming the system needs more refrigerant when the actual problem is no airflow.

5. Water dripping inside the cabin

What's happening: evaporator drain blocked, water condensing on the cold evaporator has nowhere to go and ends up in the cabin.

Common causes: drain tube blocked with debris (very common), drain tube disconnected, evaporator case cracked.

What we do: locate the drain tube (under the vehicle on the passenger side typically) and clear it. Often a simple unblock with a piece of wire. If the case is cracked, the dashboard needs to come out. Expensive but necessary.

The wrong fix: drilling a hole in the carpet to drain water (we've seen this). The underlying drain is still blocked, and now water is going into the carpet from inside.

The pattern

The pattern across these is the same as most automotive work: the symptom is rarely the cause, the cheap fix is rarely the right fix, and proper diagnosis saves customers money over time.

Air conditioning in particular is one area where bad service is common. Many workshops have a "refrigerant fill and pray" approach. A proper AC service involves pressure testing, leak finding, and addressing the actual cause of any problem. It costs more on day one and less by the end of the year.
