What "Industrial Training" Actually Looks Like at Fiitech
One of the things we say often: "industrial training is what makes the difference." Here's what we actually mean by that.
Every Fiitech course is split into three phases: lectures, industrial training, and a final project. The middle phase. Industrial training. Is where the course differs most from what students might experience at a polytechnic or university.
Lectures, you can imagine. A classroom. An instructor at the front. Diagrams on the board. Theory.
Industrial training is harder to picture without seeing it. Let's describe what actually happens.
The workshop floor
Industrial training happens in our active workshop in Farin Gada. The workshop isn't a teaching workshop. It's a real workshop that services real customer vehicles every day. Students train on those vehicles.
When a customer brings in a car for diagnosis, students participate in the diagnosis under instructor supervision. When an ECU needs repair, students see the actual fault, the actual procedure, the actual outcome. When a solar installation is happening on a customer's property, students go to the site.
This means the cases students see are unpredictable but realistic. You don't choose what comes through the door. Sometimes it's a straightforward oil leak; sometimes it's an immobiliser fault on a 2018 Mercedes that takes three days to resolve.
The instructor relationship
Each student is paired with an instructor for the industrial training phase. The instructor is doing the actual work; the student is part of it. The instructor explains what they're doing, what they've concluded, and why. The student starts as a careful observer and progressively takes on more of the procedure under supervision.
By the end of industrial training, students are doing significant parts of the work themselves. Diagnostic procedures, component replacements, installations. With the instructor checking the work.
What a typical day might involve
There isn't a typical day, which is the point. Some examples:
A day in Automotive Electrical industrial training:
- 9am: scan the customer Honda Accord that came in with no-start condition
- 9:30am: live data review with the instructor; identify likely cause (failing crankshaft position sensor)
- 10am: locate the CKP on this engine, prepare for replacement
- 11am: replace CKP, clear codes, test-run the vehicle
- 12pm: lunch
- 1pm: new customer arrives. Toyota Camry with intermittent power loss
- 1:30pm: scan, no codes stored; review live data while driving the vehicle
- 2:30pm: identify likely cause (failing throttle position sensor giving intermittent signal)
- 3pm: confirm with multimeter on the suspected sensor; replace it
- 4pm: another customer. Battery dies overnight, suspected parasitic draw
- 4:30pm: methodical procedure to isolate the draw by pulling fuses one at a time
- 5:30pm: identify draw source (faulty trunk light switch keeping the trunk light on)
- 6pm: write up case notes for the day
A student in industrial training might be a primary participant on one or two of these jobs and a supporting observer on the rest. Over a month or two, they see dozens of jobs and participate directly in many.
Why this matters more than lecture time
You can listen to a hundred lectures about diagnostic procedure and still not know what to do when faced with an actual broken vehicle. The first time you read a fault code on a real car, you'll feel different about what that code means. The first time you trace a wire through a real harness, you'll understand why the diagrams matter. The first time you replace a sensor and verify the fix worked, you'll have a kind of confidence you can't get from theory.
This is why our courses dedicate one to three months to industrial training. Less than that, and students leave knowing what they should do without ever having done it.
Comparison to traditional education
A polytechnic or university automotive engineering programme typically has lab sessions and SIWES (Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme) attachments. The labs are usually limited to teaching equipment, not real customer vehicles. SIWES is typically three to six months at a workshop or company arranged by the institution. Quality varies dramatically. Some students get excellent placements; others spend six months making tea.
Our industrial training is structured: it happens at our own workshop, with our own instructors, on our own equipment, on actual customer vehicles, every working day. There's no question of whether the placement will be useful. The placement is the course.
The cumulative effect
By the time a Fiitech student completes industrial training and moves to their final project, they've personally participated in dozens of real diagnoses, repairs, or installations. They've used the tools repeatedly. They've made mistakes and corrected them under supervision. They've seen what the actual work looks like.
The final project is then their proof that they can do the work alone. By that point, it's not a leap. It's the next step.
This is what we mean when we say industrial training makes the difference.
